Biotechnology - Advanced

Program Code:BTA
Campus:Seneca@York
Duration:6 Semesters (3 Years)
Offered:Fall
Winter
Credential Awarded:Ontario College Advanced Diploma
Work-Integrated Learning:Optional Work Term

Program Description

This program prepares you to work as a research technologist in life sciences through familiarization with scientific methods, experimental techniques and research equipment. You'll gain the theoretical and practical training to perform assays with the level of efficiency, precision and accuracy necessary for research and development work.

Since the number of seats at the third semester level is limited, students who fail to maintain a semester GPA of at least 2.5 during their first year and each subsequent semester will be transferred to an alternative program within the School of Biological Sciences and Applied Chemistry.

Common First Year

In the School of Biological Sciences and Applied Chemistry, the Technician (two-year) and Technologist (three-year) programs have a common first year, that is, semester one and semester two.

Areas of Study

You'll study a wide range of topics, including: molecular genetics, immunology, tissue culture, virology, biological and biochemical techniques, histology, cell biology, biochemistry, computers and statistics, as well as a common first year of basic biology, chemistry and mathematics.

Admission Requirements

Program Eligibility:

  • Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or equivalent with:
    • Grade 12 English: ENG4(C) or ENG4(U)
    • Grade 12 Mathematics: (C) or (U) or Grade 11 Mathematics: MCR3(U)
    • Grade 11 Biology: (C) or (U)
    • Grade 12 Chemistry: (C)
  • OR Mature Student Status (age 19 or older) with the above prerequisite course(s), their equivalent(s) or appropriate Academic and Career Entrance (ACE) Certificate program credits (see Academic Upgrading).

Note:

  • Students who do not meet these requirements may be given an alternate offer for the Applied Science and Technology Fundamentals certificate program.

Work-Integrated Learning - Optional

Optional Work Term

Students meeting all academic requirements may have the opportunity to complete an optional work term(s) in a formal work environment.  The work term(s) is similar in length to an academic semester and typically involves full-time work hours that may be paid or unpaid. In programs with limited work term opportunities, additional academic requirements and a passing grade on a communication assessment may be required for eligibility.  Eligibility for participation does not guarantee a work position will be secured. Additional fees are required for those participating in the optional work term stream regardless of success in securing a work position.
