Mathematics - Introductory Calculus and Statistics

Subject Description
MTH356 is the third of four mathematics courses offered to Technology students. This course is a study of differential calculus and statistics. It covers limits, the fundamental concept of the derivative, the rules of differentiation for algebraic and transcendental functions, and the applications of derivatives to electronics. The fundamental concepts in statistics that are covered, include the normal curve, process control and linear regression.

Credit Status
One subject credit in Computer Engineering Technology Program and Electronics Engineering Technology - Communications Option and Control Systems Option programs.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this subject the student will be able to:

1. Demonstrate an understanding of mathematics topics by performing operations involving straight lines, functions and function notation, trigonometric and inverse trigonometric functions, logarithmic and exponential functions.
2. Evaluate the limit of a given function algebraically, numerically and graphically.
3. Demonstrate an understanding of the definition of the derivative as it relates to secants and tangents, and to average and instantaneous rates of change.
4. Determine the derivative of a function by first principle.
5. Perform operations using different symbols and notations for the derivative.
6. Perform operations using the rules for differentiation to determine the derivatives of explicit algebraic functions, transcendental functions and implicit functions.
7. Demonstrate an understanding of the derivative as it applies to tangents and normals, maximum, minimum and inflection points, curve sketching, rates of change and optimization problems.
8. Analyse statistical data using graphical summaries, and numerical descriptions such as standard deviation and z-scores.
9. Demonstrate an understanding of the Normal Distribution Curve, the Empirical Rule, Process Control and Linear regression.
