In these practical courses designed for working professionals, you will strengthen writing and verbal skills which are not only wanted but also vital to any organization. These college-level credit English courses are specific to the Faculty of Continuing Education. There are no prerequisites but a strong command of English is required.

Accent Reduction - Advanced

Advanced level ESL speaker

This advanced level Accent Reduction course is designed for students who are fluent in English but wish to acquire a more standardized North American speech pattern. The second level of Access Reduction emphasizes the development of sound production, rhythm, stress and intonation patterns in "real life" communicative contexts.

Grammar for Writing

Prerequisite(s):

A strong command of English is recommended

In this course, students develop proficient editing skills that enable them to identify grammatical weaknesses in their own writing. Through a focus on error analysis and guided practice, students will learn to become independent self-editors and be able to apply the strategies acquired beyond the duration of this course.

With a focus on practical, transferable skills, this professional development course introduces students to the basic formats and principles of business communication. Emphasis is placed on the kinds of questions that business writers must ask when approaching any writing task: What is my purpose for writing? For whom is it intended? How much information do I need to include? How successfully have I accomplished my goal? Are my grammar and syntax correct?

Effective Communications for Engineers

Prerequisite(s):

A grade 12 level of English is strongly recommended.

This course teaches important skills for effective written and oral communications of technical information. It distinguishes between academic and technical (job-related) writing and guides the students through proven steps to enhance the effectiveness of their various written technical communications. The course also provides a practical approach for planning and structuring technical oral presentations. Students get to use this approach and to practise the techniques taught.

Upon successful completion of the program requirements, please submit a Request for Recognition of Achievement Form to the Faculty of Continuing Education and Training. There is no cost for this and your Recognition of Achievement will be mailed to you.
